Lousy Church Sign

I know, I know, don't say it...I found this one in town on the new "Worship Center" church (name withheld because, well, you know why.)
Don't get into debt
Act your wage
Clever! The principle is a good one, definitely, but is this the message of Christ to an unbelieving world, to get out of financial debt? I guess we are all confused as to the purpose of church signs. Scheduling? Announcements? Scripture messages? Or cute, clever tripe? It is as elusive as the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop. Such as this really compromises the effectiveness of a viable point of contact with your community.

Tony,

When I pastored Florence Avenue Baptist in Virgilina, we had a sign. However, I didn't put pithy men's words on it. Rather, I put bible verses on it and would change them every week.

Why did I choose to put scripture on our church sign? Isa. 55:10-11.

Les,

I think that is the appropriate way to use a church sign. Thankfully our church does not have a marquee, but if it did, I would use Scripture.

You may be interested to know that Sean McKenzie, who was pastor of FABC, just recently resigned. I really liked Sean; hated to see him go. The last I heard they only had a supply.

Bro. Tony,
We use scripture on our church sign at PPBC .

Les,
You choose a good scripture to help make your decision ? Be blessed.

Blessings.
Ron.

Ron,

I believe that is wise. As Les alluded to, Scripture is best compared to man's cleverness!

that sign is hilarious! nah, I don't think they intend to project the message of Christ is getting out of financial debt. We all have topics that stimulate thought and though the marquee would best be utilized in sharing events and scripture, this one seems harmless to me. would it draw people in to hear the gospel? I don't think so. but what do I know? God uses the silliest of things sometimes. selahV

Mrs. V,

Yeah, I agree it is harmless. Just seems like a waste to me. But hey, perhaps it will spawn a financial management class and God might get someone out of deep trouble.

God uses the silliest of things sometimes That includes yours truly!!!

Tony,

I was aware of Sean's resignation. He called me a couple of weeks before he resigned to talk to me about it.

Do you have his new email address?
